Prevent Further Injury

  • Secure the scene to prevent further injury.
  • Someone takes charge.
  • Put on flashers and move uninvolved vehicles.
  • Leave room (100 ft.) on either side of crash site.
  • Make sure crash site is visible (flashers, lights, flags, vests).
  • Control traffic in each direction—be visible.

Assess the Situation

  • Determine your physical location.
  • Determine who and how many people are involved and extent of their injuries.
  • Decide on additional protection for the scene to prevent further injury.

Contact EMS

  • Assign a person to call 911 and tell you when contact has been made; stay connected to EMS.
  • Make sure EMS/ 911 has someone’s contact number.

Treat the Injured

  • Don’t move the injured person unless:
    • hot pipes on leg
    • in middle of road with poor visibility
    • laying in gasoline
    • face down and not breathing
    • if nightime and you must leave scene to get help
  • Talk to the injured person, ask questions.
  • Do not remove helmets.
  • Use your training in CPR and basic first aid (see First Aid).
  • Obtain injured person’s emergency contact info.
